After several weeks of discouragement with those danged stripers, I set out this morning in search of catfish.  Once the boat was launched, I shouted out “Stripers do not bother my bait.  I don’t want you”.

Did have a harder time finding bait this morning.  Coulda had something to do with that big ol yellow moon hanging in the sky….

I needed more bait than usual as I was going to throw out my jugs.  I’ve never used live shad on jug lines before so this was something new for me.

I wound up with a good bit of frisky bait after searching for a bit.  I finally hit the jack pot outside the marina against the wooden sea wall.  I also lost a $60 cast net.  That was a bummer.

But I had a smaller back up net that I used.  It worked out OK because the shad were close to the surface.

Set out my jugs on the river ledge of North Island on the TX side in 40 to 45 feet of water.

Capt Kurt had put me onto some coordinates where he did well catfishing last week so I headed over there.  I drifted bait there for quite a while catching one sand bass and one channel cat.  Both on the bottom in 40 feet of water……hmmmmm

As I had announced to the stripers to leave my shad alone, they cooperated.  I didn’t catch a striper all morning.  I fished from 7:30 until noon….

It was nice floating around waiting for rods to go down.  I only saw 4 other boats all morning.

No problem finding fish.....or bait....I think that's the problem.

I came back and pulled my jugs up about 9:30.  I had out 22 hooks.  All the shad was gone except 2 big gizzards.  Very interesting as the fish didn’t hit the bigger ones and I guess they are feeding only on small shad.  So…match the hatch.

Smaller catfish musta pulled off my shad…Only 2 stupid catfish actually held on.

I did manage to back over a jug line thereby wrapping the main line around my prop.  This resulted in my having to use the swim ladder and test out the 80 degree water.  Felt pretty good.  No damage to prop.

Decided to pull a hell pet as I was marking a lot of fish that wouldn’t touch a shad.  I moved out into 40 feet of water and let out 225 feet of line.  No problem catching sand bass.  But they were all small and I got tired of reeling a Hell Bender in 225 feet with a 6 inch sand bass on it.  This one was caught on live bait.  You can see the shad  tail hanging out.  [smile]

So, at noon, I said uncle.  Finished the day with 2 nice sand bass, a channel cat, and 2 blues.

Went to the Mobil station for an extra large Diet Coke and some biscuits and gravy.  [smile]  Not bad for 480 calories.  [smile]

The net I lost was $60.  Here’s what part of a $60 fish dinner looks like.  I chewed very slowly.

Axman. I've been working the catfish over out of Buncombe creek for the last week using lye soap On my jug lines. Works great if you can find it. Didn't do so well on little smokies.

Actually Tim, I wanted to spare you guys the result of a jug line hook coming in too fast.  [smile]

Working lures this morning and every time I do something I hit it.  Didn't bleed much.  I stuck my finger in the lake in an effort to attract catfish but that didn't work.  [smile]

Lye soap??  Interesting.  This time of year the Lil Smokies don't work too well.  80 degree water makes 'em too soft.

I'll have to check out Buncombe.  I've been staying east of north island most of the time because the water is clearer but I bet catfish don't care.  [smile]

If they are biting I'll let you know on what, where, what time, and how to hold your mouth.

Only time I don't give out information is when someone else has given me a tip...especially the guides.

But, I like everyone to catch fish!!!

I am new to this site but would like to say thanks for the up-date on the fishing on the lake. This will be my first season with my own fishing boat to be going to Texoma. Fished there a lot with a friend and really enjoy the lake. Thanks again Axman..

You're fishing too deep. Try around 20-30 ft.

Catfish definitely want the smaller shad right now. Net stickers are the trick. About 3 reels off the bottom, if you mark a bunch of fish on your fish finder it's probably catfish and sandies. I also use my splasher when going for blue cats, their just like stripers they chase shad around and love live shad.

3 days before and 3 days after the full moon. Pretty much a waste of time. Little Smokies in any temperture. If the fish don't want them, more for you. Try fishing with potatoe chips, the ruffle kind preferred. Fish hate them and there hard to puton the hook. But they go great with Little Smokies. Good Luck.

Thanks Axman. I will appreciate any good report.

I wonder if anyone has tried to use a dead shad in place of a fly with a slab. With my small boat I can't use a bait tank. I've tried most everything but shad die fast in the minnow bucket even if you change the water often and add ice.

PK get a battery operated aerator. You can keep 20 or so in a five gallon bucket for several hours.

The bait pic is show is in 20 fow.  I tried every depth.  I think I'm on a slump.

Loco tells me his buddies are catching catfish in 1 to 8 fow.

I haven't gone that shallow.  They are using crappie floats.
