Got up this morning.....parked on the couch.....drank coffee.

My good friend George Pratt invited me to go out with him and Daniel Winans.......

I just couldn't get it in gear to go.  [smile]

So, about 9:30 (with 5 or 6 orders in the queue), I couldn't take it any longer....

Launched at Mill Creek and started fishing around 10:45 or so.  I've been having good luck around Oil Well Point so I headed up that way.

Immediately distracted by bird behind North Island.  I eased up into the birds but marked zero fish.  Just bait.  There was one boat there but they weren't catching anything.  I wonder why?  [smile]

Headed to OWP and was surprised to not see any birds out in the main lake.

I've been doing the best in 25 - 40 fow so that's where I went looking.

Wasn't disappointed.  I love dead sticking so I set up and drifted.  They would peck at a white ice fluke but wouldn't hit it very aggressively.

I changed to a darker color fluke and picked up a few.  I was using a white head.

I picked up another rod that had a green chartreuse head and a baby bass green fluke on it.  That was the ticket.

I caught fish literally as fast as I could get the hook back into the water.  Fish were on the bottom but I don't think the fluke ever made it down that far.  [smile]

Was a great morning.  I saw 2 boats between 10:45 and 1:15.  Then, coming back into Mill Creek I saw Daniel and George headed towards Highport.

From what I understand, they had an excellent day of big fish on sassy shads.

I love dead sticking.  I love that winter time weather.  I love seeing less than 4 boats all morning.  [smile]

Do I carry flukes?????  Yes I do and I don't not hesitate to change colors if I drift through fish and don't get a hit within 5 minutes.

Excellent report Joe. Sounds like a great day. Nice work figuring them out. Were you using a 1oz head?

Great report.  This is my favorite time of the year to fish.  Especially during the week when no one else is on the lake.

The water temp was 56.1 Sunday morning when I went out.  Also, the hits on live bait were much softer than they have been recently.  Guess dead sticking time is upon us.  'Tis the season   [wink]

Joe was right . We were in big fish all morning with no boats around except for Dave Wand  and he was several 100 yards away . Caught nothing over 25" to 26" but caught 20 or so of them with some nice box fish thrown in . All fish were really healthy and released back except for 2 for Daniels dinner .

What is DEAD STICKING? I am casting Sassy Shad and Flukes till I am Blue in the face With nary a bump. Like my old daddy used to say
" Guess you ain't holdin your mouth rite". I even spit tobacco juice on my lure before I chunked it. Guess I will Try Dead Sticking, if some one will tell me what that is, and how to do it.

Cougar Dead sticking typically you use a rod rigged with slabs or a 5" fluke on a jig head. Some put a smaller fluke or grub abv.   Drop down at the depth you think the fish are. Drift as slow as possible, either with drift sock or even with trolling motor, and then waiting for the SUBTLE bites. It will be a tiny peck usually, not a pull down. You have to be ninja fast. Takes practice. You want to be drifting at .5 mph or less usually.
Good luck.

What Scotty said.

When wind is howling, like yesterday, I use a drift sock and 1.5 ounce sassy shad heads to keep the lure down.

Prolly caught 50 fish yesterday dead sticking.
