After reading Budward's report I thought about logging off.  [smile]

But, I report what I do so here goes.......

Been reading a lot about the fishing being good in the afternoon around the islands....

So, I kicked around til 6:30 p.m. yesterday and then headed to Highport.

I had a quart bag of shad previously frozen and a new slab lure I'm working on.

Launched and headed out to east end of North Island.  On first drop, I got a sand bass on the new lure.  It was on.  But I couldn't catch any big fish and once again, no stripers.......

I tried previously frozen shad in my favorite catfish hole.  No takers.  No nibbles.

After dark, I headed into Highport looking for live bait.  Man, it was tough.  Two hours later I had probably 3 dozen shad.

I did catch a lot of crappie about 5 inches long.

I had marked a lot of fish out around the islands but didn't know what they were.  So, I headed back and dropped live shad.  Drifted around North Island for about an hour.  No hits.

About 11 p.m. I headed all the way into the back of Ma Tucker's looking in shallow water for any fish markings.  Very few were up in there.  Headed to Buzzard Cove.  Same thing.

About midnight, after having run out of Slim Jims and Animal Crackers, I headed to Hog Island and cut thru by Treasure Island to see what was up in there.  Lots of fish marked from 8 feet out to the cut at 20 fow.

Dropped four live bait rods and sat there for a while.

All of a sudden all four rods go down and it was on.  The first rod I grabbed had a big fish on it.  The fight lasted less than 10 second.s

Set the hook on the second rod and the fish headed straight for the river channel.

Fight lasted about 30 seconds.  OK.  At this point, I'm suspicious.

Third rod same thing.

Fourth rod felt like a good fish but not quite as big.  Got him to the boat only to see a 4 foot gar.

All live bait rods trashed.  Didn't feel like re-rigging.

Got home at 2:30 took shower and watched rerun of TCU game.

Bummer.

Nice peaceful night of fishing but nothing for the box. That's tough to fish that hard and long and not have a little something to stink up a skillet.[frown]

The last two days I've had to catch bait on the lake, both times during the day. There are some sizable schools of shad on th river side of the islands. I threw on one school that was 20 feet deep. I had a full net of thread fins!

What depth of water were you fishing in most of the day? The thermocline is at about 30-35 ft right now and the fish seem to be feeding in about the 20-30ft depth range. Look for bait on your sonar in that depth of water and fish right there.

Also fresh bait is crucial. Whether its live or your cutting it up, having FRESH bait makes a world of difference.

Oh, one more thing. What kind of fishfinder are you running? I know on my HDS I have it adjusted so that catfish show up yellow, they don't have scales so they show up as a softer return. Striper or gar show up as a dark blue/red/almost purple color. By knowing exactly what kind of fish i am looking at i can target them a lot better.

I have a HDS10.....  I have noticed that some of the fish show up yellow.  Interesting.  Thanks for the tip.

Fresh bait was not an issue.  They'd been swimming an hour previously in the lake.  [smile]

I fished as shallow as 8 feet and as deep as 40.

I'm in a slump.  [smile]  [smile]
