Anyone have any experience with this fishfinder yet?  I'm attracted to all the Geeky features bluetooth connectivity to iphone, connectivity to auto pilot, connectivity to trolling motors, structure scan, etc...

Just wondering if anyone has one

I don't have the Gen 3 but have several Gen 2's with mobile Wifi, Sonar Hub, Structurescan and the TM150 CHIRP transducer which essentially makes it a Gen 3 unit outside of the extra buttons on the side.  Like you, I'm fascinated with what all this stuff can do.  I have recently purchased the Pinpoint GPS connect but haven't tried that out yet.

As far as the fish finders themselves, it still a work in progress as I haven't used them enough yet.  I love the overlays when trolling and the contour mapping to stay at desired water levels and knowing when either shallow or deep water is approaching.  With the overlays, you can see what the bottom looks like before you pass back over it.  This allows you to either stay away from snags or get close to areas where you've seen fish holding in previous passes.  There is way more functionality than I've figured out how to use, especially when your trying to mark fish on plane.  Overall, I really like the touch screen and building different viewing screens is simple.  The only downside is, there is never enough screen to allow you to view everything you want to see at once without it being tiny if you don't have multiple units.  Buy as large as you can afford.

Structurescan seems to work great for trolling/downrigging and throwing for bait.  It doesn't seem to help me much bait fishing other than looking neat so far.  I could potentially see in time with more usage/experience and combining downscan with spotlock it could be more helpful bait fishing.  Downscan could allow you to mark points in great detail and spotlock would allow you to hold on that spot without throwing anchor, I'll have to see if that theory holds up in the future.

The Wifi connect is pretty cool as well.  You can be anywhere in the boat and pull up any of your units for viewing.  My complaint is the phone app only lets you view whereas the tablet app allows you to control any of your units.  Seems to me the phone app ought to allow you to control your units as well.

The CHIRP transducer has given me issues.  I've had a difficult time finding a mounting place where I do not pick up a lot of noise on the screen when on plane.  I can run the 83/200 in either mode mounted in the same spot and do not have the noise issues.  Hopefully between making a few tweaks on the actual transducer and using the latest firmware updates I'll achieve the noise free screen on plane I'm looking for.  I sent photos of my mounting to Lowrance and they seem to think that the firmware updates and tweaking the transducer a little more will eliminate my problems.  As far using CHIRP, I really don't have enough experience to say if it is worth it yet or not with all the problems that I have had so far.  However, watching Youtube videos of CHIRP working properly makes me think it will serve me well once I get everything figured out and mounted correctly.

I am disappointed that Spotlightscan is not supported in conjunction with the XI5 since the XI5 is the only trolling motor you can control with your HDS unit.  I could see at times where Spotlightscan could be useful either up in coves or open water to scan for topwater fish.  I'm talking to an engineering friend of mine to see if we could make a fixture that would work off the trolling motor shaft to allow Spotlightscan to work with an electric steer motor.  As it stands, Spotlightscan only works with cable steer trolling motors.  This makes no sense to me since Lowrance and Motorguide have teamed up to allow the HDS to control the XI5 but not cable steer motors.  I've repeatedly asked Lowrance there thoughts behind this but never get reasonable response.

I'm curious to see how well the Pinpoint GPS connect works and how well the trolling motor follows course when the wind is up.  I do have the 105 lb thrust motor so hopefully it will do well.  If it works, I'll probably add the autopilot for the outboard as it would be nice at times to allow the boat to follow predefined routes that you can make off saved information from previous or current trips.

Overall I'm happy with the functionality of the units and believe they're the best on the market but disappointed with not being able to add Spotlightscan and all the add-on stuff you have to buy to make everything connect and work.  Between eithernet cables, the NMEA starter kit, Pinpoint GPS connect, etc, you can easily have $500.00 plus in just cables if your buying at retail.  Ebay and Craigslist have become my friend for a lot of this stuff.

LLopher, So far I have not necessarily been able to do so with any consistent results yet.  One of the big advantage of CHIRP is the multiple ranges in which it is able to operate.  When set up correctly, CHIRP can not only maintain a strong bottom but can mark fish on plane.  From what I understand, Chirp can only be used on HDS Gen 2 units with sonar hub or the new Gen 3 units.

Retail_geek, yes let me know your experience as I think you'll enjoy it along with all the bells and whistles that you can add.  I saw immediate improvements in my fishing once I switched to these units this past July.  That's the reason I've added more units and a lot of the "extras" as I don't fish near as much I used to be able to.  I felt like any proven advantage was worth it for me.

Your transducers getting air bubbles under them on plan that's why they don't show fish or the bottom on plan

I agree, I think that is some of it but what is troubling is I can mount the 83/200 in the same spot and not have the same issue.  Lowrance told me there latest firmware update on the sonar hub should help along with adjusting the transducer about 1/2 inch.

It may be awhile before I get a chance to check it out to see if it helps though.  My neighbor called me Sunday and told me the wind hand broke part of my lift loose and sunk the motor half of my boat.  Just what I wanted to hear.  I get to deal with the insurance adjuster tomorrow.  Hopefully we can agree quickly and I can get back on the water in two to three weeks.

I just got a hds 12 touch gen 3 today..i'm going to use a sonar hub then ethernet to the unit even though u dont need the sonar hub..some feel that the sonar and downimaging are syncronized perfectly by doing this,,lowrance also told me that the regular sonar transducers will provide the best chirp..I am going to try it out tommorow at Ft. Supply lake..we have been drifting worms for walleye..the deepest water is only about 12 ft,,,I bid on the 12 on ebay and got it cheap,, I have 6 hds 8 units....i am keeping,,, and a new in the box hds 10 insight bundle I am going to sell...items,, I will list themon the for sale forum soon.

took it out briefly yesterday since we had to go up to the lake to clean out, defrost, and turn the fridge off since power maybe cut to our docks.  Love it.  Saw the stumps in deep water that I caught fish of fairly recently when they were exposed

I have used the touch 12 on 2 trips now,,, I am. Really liking it,, alot,, still not knowing how to do alot of things,,, but it is so fast to use,, I know it is awesome,, I have ordered a transducer mount that will fit on the front of the boat and it will have the lss2 and skimmer transducers both mounted on the down rod,, ,,you lower it 12 inches under the water and raise it for very shallow water...I will have extra plates to mount it on different boats. .lets you see what is coming and below the front of the boat...costs around $100 or less..I have a 7 touch I will mount up front and network everything...I can use any of my lowrance units on any of my boats...usually 2 hds 8's at the console and 1 hds 8 up front..I have a freind who is making a unit so the spoltlight scan can be used with my terrova I-pilot...looks like the 12 touch will be at the console and 1 hds 8...now if I could only catch a fish,,,

sounds like a great set up, the 7" is bigger than I am used to but I not so secretly covet the 12" screen, going to hook my son's ipad to it and mount it facing the front of the boat so i can see the depth and finder from the front
