Well got it all setup and took it out last week. I don't know if I have the transducer mounted wrong or what but I cannot get the side scan to show up clear. It's so bad I couldn't even tell where the boat ramp was. Then to make things worse the side imaging and down imaging stopped working. I reset to factory settings and it started working again. Anyone know what could be causing this

I have no idea but I do know side scan is sensitive to mounting location and or motor interference. I have been contemplating a humminbird unit so I will be paying close attention to how this works out for you.

I hear for shallow water they are much better than the lowrance. My buddies have the lowrance and we cannot see very far out to the sides below 4 ft. or so. I think it the angle the tranducer shoots out.

Let us know how it works out.

You guys are high tech.  I don't know much about them but like Briars said, the DSI transducer location is critical from what I've read.

I know Loco Pescado did quite a bit of research when he mounted his Lowrance unit.  It works very well.

Thanks guys. All my fishing buddies have lowrances. I do know that if I can ever get it setup right it will work in shallow water better than the lowrance. I'm hoping it's either the transducer mount or even low voltage. Seemed like the longer I used it the worse it got. I will keep you guys informed.

Prabably too late to help. I have a Hummingbird 899 and I installed it with no problems. The transducer must have a clear view on both sides of the boat and also should to be at least 12 inches from the lower unit tp prevent the cavatation from the prop showing up. I installed trandsucer in the center of the hull because if I installed it on either side the hull it would have not had a clear view of the other side of the boat. Also for using down or side scan you must be running less than 6 pmh for the best results. The down and side scan is more sensitive and prob wash will look like a cloud or shadow on the screen. I use down or side and sonar when running slow or looking for fish. It shows fish as lines but it is much easier to see a trees and grass as it shows up in more definition. The imageing is helping me to learn more of what I am seeing on the sonar. I have had mine now for almost a year and have no complaints. I had used Lowrance since the early 80s but got into a argument with customer support over some repairs and decided it was time to try another brand. I got an appology from Lowrance but it was too late and I already had one in the mail but I still have a Lowrance 522 on front. Have not used Hummingbirds Customer support yet so time will tell.

Thank you for your advice. I still have not resolved my issue. I am going to call humminbird tomorrow. I took it out yesterday and it tried everything to get a clear screen. I'm not getting any prop wash and my speed was around 3.4mph. I am really thinking about selling it and going to a lowrance. I really think it is the head unit. I reset factory settings and put it in demo mode and the same results. Almost like u can see every individual pixel. I'm hoping it's a easy fix.

Not familiar with the Helix units but looking at the HB site it looks like they have a memory card slot and support snapshots. If you take a snapshot of what is going on and post it, it may help someone offer a fix.

Also there are a couple of very active Humminbird related forums that have a lot of activity. A snapshot posted on one of them should get questions answered pretty quickly...

Try one of these:

I hope it works out for you.  I just bought a Helix 7.  I hope I don't run into the same problems.  Planning on mounting it this weekend.

Well I finally got mine lined out.  3 firmware updates.  Its a dang fishfinder.  Not a computer.  It took 3 months off and on to figure it out.  I finally paired my cell to my laptop and then to the Helix and updated that way.  BTW If the Nav card is not working, you need a firmware update.
