This is only my second post but I've been trolling this website several times a week for some time.  I appreciate all the sharing of information here and hope I'll be able to contribute some this year.

I'd like to know what hooks everyone uses and why.  I'm just learning to striper fish but I've used mostly Eagle Claw or Gamakatsu circle hooks (2/0).  I like circle hooks because I think fish can hang themselves (especially if you're not paying close enough attention) and they result in fewer gut hooks as I throw a lot of my fish back.

There seems to be debate over circles vs. "J" style hooks.  Some people think circle hooks result in fewer hookups and others don't.  The Octupus hooks look like a good mix of the two and I just bought some. I'd like to know what some of you pros think about the style and size of hooks to use for live bait.  Thanks.

I have tried lots of hooks over the years, but settled on Mustad Ultra Point Croker hooks in size 2. I do use the same hook in size 1/0 for drifting big baits. The hooks normally hook only in the top portion of the mouth and rarely are fish gut hooked and fish will hook themselves many times. The smaller No. 2 hook seems to work better with bait as it can move around better and attract more fish. They also stay sharper than any other hook I have tried.

Yeah....I think there are as many hook choices as there are fishermen.  [smile]

I'm assuming you are talking live bait hooks.

Several years ago I switched to 2/0 Kahle hooks and have been using them every since.

I do use 2/0 circle hooks as well as Kahle hooks on my jug lines for catfish.

Some of the guides I know drift with only 1/0 Kahle hooks.

You are right about the circle hooks but with my family YOU CANNOT GET THEM TO NOT SET THE HOOK WHEN THE ROD GOES DOWN.  THEN THEY MISS THE FISH AND BLAME ME.........YOU CAN'T JERK A CIRCLE AND I CAN'T GET THAT THROUGH THEIR HEADS (FAMILY OR FISH).  [smile]

Don't have that problem as much with Kahle hooks.....

1/0 or 2/0 kahles. Depending on size of baits I'm using. Mostly 1/0
