Been awhile since I’ve posted, long while actually, Clayton (son) and I fished Texoma this past Saturday June 15th. Had planned on throwing the net but didn’t get on the water until 5:45am, so decided to roll with some medium minners’ we’d bought “just in case”, if they didn’t work we’d go to Plan B (plastic & lead). We had a fish fry planned for dinner Sat. Night so we had to come up with something, or folks were going to have to “fill up” hush puppies and French Fries, lol.
We launched off a gravel road that leads down to the boat ramp, leaving from the mouth of Big Mineral the plan was to run east for better water clarity and hope to see some action along the way. Water clarity was actually pretty decent in Big Mineral area, but we headed east anyway, all the other boats we encountered were also heading east. Past experience there’s usually some schools of fish near the dam when they return from their spawning runs so that’s basically where we ended up.
Things started off really slow, didn’t really like anything I saw on the depth finder but there were plenty of “professionals” in the area, so we hung around a bit. We finally just left, I can only sit around on a spot for so long with no bites and a blank screen. Checked some ledges and humps nearby, finally started marking a few fish on ledges in 34’-37’ foot of water (fow). Fished our baits 2-3 turns up from the bottom. Started off with a decent mixture of box fish and long fish, then it was all long fish. Made a couple other moves, was gonna look around mid-lake on our way home but wind was kickin’ pretty good, so about 10:45am we packed it in.
I hear shad are a little scarce, and large shiners are sold out, so don’t be afraid to fish medium minner's, or I’m sure the Black Saltys and Goldfish will get it done. We downsized our hooks to a 1/0 Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap's , but many other varieties will work, these were just what we had. We hooked’em up through the chin and out their nostrils, but use whatever technique you prefer. Hopefully the Corps can keep letting some water out and get things back to normal. Here’s a few pics of our day.
Axman, I know Memory costs money, so if these pics are too big, or there's too many, feel free to delete some or all.
